Overhead hazards
Operating near powerlines? Use this page as a guide on how to stay safe from overhead hazards.
When working near to overhead services with mobile plant, including cranes, plan the works to make sure there are control measures to keep a safe distance away from overhead powerlines. These distances can vary depending on the size of the overheads.
Overhead services still have a very high incident rate. To manage this risk, you need to be aware of the proximity of the:
- boom
- rope
- load.
Powerlines
Powerlines are a hazardous overhead obstruction.
Always maintain a safe distance from electrical wires when travelling and operating with the boom raised.

Electrical hazard
The head of a long boom will spring up when the load is released. Make sure there is a safe distance from any electrical conductors or other obstructions before releasing the load.
Do not set cranes up close to any electrified equipment or apparatus unless there are safeguards for persons using the crane.

Clearances from live aerial conductors
Each asset authority has different requirements for clearances from live aerial conductors (like powerlines).
These different factors affect clearances from powerlines:
- personnel working in the area
- blind corners
- traffic flow
- under-ground services
- weather conditions.
