Project information
Benefits
The project will:
- provide the infrastructure to meet the growing and changing healthcare needs of the population in the catchment area
- support contemporary models of care
- efficiently support the network of health services in the Clarence Valley region
- improve the co-location of services, to support better patient access and staff workflows
- provide culturally appropriate facilities to meet the needs of staff and the Aboriginal community in the catchment
- provide a safe and modern work environment to attract and strengthen workforce to meet future demand.
Scope
The redevelopment will improve capacity and include:
- a new three-storey building with an expanded Emergency Department
- Emergency Short Stay
- Medical Imaging
- MRI
- inpatient unit
- and an expanded Day Surgery and Operating Suite with two additional operating theatres.
The new building will also provide a space for maternity services to be relocated in the future.
Work has started on the early works, involving refurbishing two administration blocks within the former minimum-security part of the old Grafton Gaol to provide contemporary administrative, office and training support facilities for hospital staff. Once the gaol refurbishment is completed in late 2025, some hospital administration staff will be relocated from the hospital campus so that work can begin on the redevelopment. Clinical services will remain on the existing Grafton Base Hospital site.

Planning for the future redevelopment of Grafton Base Hospital is underway, bringing the community a step closer to improved health services.
Health Infrastructure has engaged a specialist project team to undertake the detailed planning and design for the redevelopment.
This includes:

A key focus of the Grafton Hospital Redevelopment project is the provision of a contemporary health facility and there is a shared desire to produce a culturally sensitive outcome for the community.
