Project overview
Kensington St, Kogarah NSW 2217
Health Infrastructure in partnership with South Eastern Sydney Local Health District is building a new Integrated Ambulatory Care Precinct at St George Hospital.
The NSW Government is investing $385 million in the St George Hospital - Stage 3 Redevelopment (the Redevelopment) and $26 million for car parking.
This stage in the Redevelopment co-locates and integrates services to meet the growing needs of the local aging and diverse communities of St George and Sutherland.
The new building, known as The Kensington Street Building, will bring together a range of day-only, ambulatory and outpatients services that are currently being delivered from different locations around the hospital campus.
Stage 3 of the Redevelopment will complement the previously completed Emergency Department, eight-level Acute Services Building and upgraded Birth Unit and Operating Theatre redevelopments.

Preparations for the Stage 3 building began in January 2022, and includes:

- construction and operation of a new nine-storey integrated Ambulatory Care Building
- refurbishment of existing services
- basement parking for 151 vehicles

- completion of a forecourt and its landscaping
- public domain works.
Construction of Stage 3 of the St George Hospital Redevelopment is expected to be completed in late 2026.
Renaming to Kensington Street Building
In 2019, the funding announcement labelled the building an 'Ambulatory Care Precinct,' leading to the adoption of 'Ambulatory Care Building' (ACB).
The similarity with the existing Acute Services Building (ASB) posed wayfinding issues due to mixed services. After extensive consultation involving consumers, staff, and clinical leadership, the recommendation to rename the building gained support from SESLHD Executive, Board, and Ministry of Health.
The Minister for Health approved the formal request to rename the eight-story building as 'Kensington Street Building' (KSB) in January 2024.
Concept design
The concept designs for the new KSB were released in March 2022. The designs were a result of extensive planning and consultation undertaken with staff and the local community.
The designs showed how the new building integrates into the existing hospital campus and will integrate a range of clinical department to improve access and the operation of outpatient services, including:
- physical rehabilitation
- medical imaging tests
- blood transfusions and biopsies.
Refined designs
Community feedback helped shape and refine the latest designs for the new state-of-the-art Kensington Street Building.
The latest designs were refined following over 300 meetings with the community, clinicians, hospital staff and consumers.
The new designs showcase a new building and a public forecourt area which will become the new main entrance to the hospital. It also highlights the building's façade, greenery, landscaping and integration with the existing hospital campus.
