Agricultural soil

Healthy soil is key to productive farming in NSW. It helps to store moisture, support plants and animals, and sustain your land over time. Discover simple and sustainable ways to care for soil and prevent erosion.

Healthy soils filter pollutants, retain water, support biodiversity, and enable sustainable food and fibre production. But without proper care, soils can degrade. This can impact vegetation, water quality, and long-term viability.  Local Land Services (LLS) works alongside landholders to protect and improve soil health.

Understanding the nature of soil

Soil testing

Testing your soil is the first step toward building long-term soil fertility and health.

Soil testing shows what’s really happening underground. It helps you:

  • make smart fertiliser decisions
  • manage nutrients efficiently
  • track changes in your soil over time.
