What to do if you find injured or displaced wildlife
If you find a native animal affected by flooding:
- Contact a local vet or licensed wildlife carer for advice.
- Do not handle the animal unless it is in immediate danger.
- Keep pets and people away from the animal.
- Do not feed or give water unless advised by a wildlife professional.
Report injured wildlife
During a natural disaster, contact the Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service (WIRES): 1300 094 737
Trained carers will assess and treat animals to support their recovery and return to the wild if possible.

Create flood-resilient wildlife habitat
You can support native wildlife by making your property more resilient to flooding:
- Plant local native vegetation to provide food and shelter.
- Leave fallen timber in place, especially pieces with hollows. These take hundreds of years to form and provide important homes for wildlife.
- Keep natural woody debris in creeks and streams to support aquatic animals.
For help choosing plants native to your area, contact your local Landcare group.
