General enquiries

The fastest way to find an answer to your question may be on this website.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can email bdmsupport@customerservice.nsw.gov.au.

We aim to reply to your enquiry within 10 business days. Include the following in your email:

  • full name
  • address
  • phone number
  • brief description of your enquiry, including your Online Reference Number (ORN) if you’ve applied online.

Family history enquiries

If you have a question about our historical records, including index corrections, email
bdm-research-unit@customerservice.nsw.gov.au. We aim to reply to your enquiry within 20 business days.

If you have experienced a technical or system issue, visit frequently asked questions about family history records for troubleshooting instructions and technical support contact information.

Call Service NSW on 13 77 88 between 7am to 7pm (AEST) Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).

Hearing or speech impairment

If you have a hearing or speech impairment, you can contact us through the National Relay Service:

  • voice calls or telephone typewriter (TTY) call 133 677 then ask for 13 77 88
  • speak and listen service call 1300 555 727 then ask for 13 77 88
  • SMS relay service on 0423 677 767 then type 13 77 88
  • make an internet relay call then type 13 77 88.

Check the status of your application

How you submitted your application will affect the time it takes to process it. Refer to our fees and processing times for current timeframes.

If your application has not been processed within the expected timeframe you can email 
bdmsupport@customerservice.nsw.gov.au to check the status of your application.

We aim to reply to your request within 10 business days. Include the following in your email:

  • full name
  • address
  • phone number
  • brief description of your application, including your Online Reference Number if you applied online.

Complaints

We welcome your feedback and are committed to handling complaints in a fair and respectful manner.

We aim to acknowledge and respond to your complaint within 5 business days. Some complaints may require additional time to investigate and resolve. Where this occurs, we will keep you informed of the progress and expected timeframes.

To make an enquiry or complaint about the handling of your personal information by the Registry, email the Department of Customer Service Privacy Team at privacy@customerservice.nsw.gov.au.

How the Registry contacts you

By email

If we require further information or documents to complete your application, we may contact you via email. Our email addresses end in:

  • @customerservice.nsw.gov.au, or
  • @bdm.customerservice.nsw.gov.au

By phone

We may call you about your application or Registry wedding ceremony. The caller identifier will be either:

  • NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages: +61 2 9321 3339
  • NSW Registry Wedding Services: +61 2 9321 3338

If you miss a call from us, you will not be able to return the call by dialling these phone numbers. Do not call Service NSW to return a missed call from us, as they cannot assist you with this matter.

We will try to call you again during business hours. Please check your voice message, email, or SMS, as we may have already sent you instructions or further information.

By SMS

You may receive an SMS from ‘NSWREGISTRY’ with Australia Post tracking details when a certificate you ordered is out for delivery if:

  • you provided an Australian mobile number starting with +61 or 04, and
  • the certificate is being delivered to an Australian postal address.

If you have ordered multiple certificates, you will receive an SMS for each certificate as each certificate is sent separately.
