New Wentworth Health Service Redevelopment
The Wentworth Health Service is a new $30 million facility; construction started in 2024 and was completed in 2025. It was built to replace the former 80-year-old hospital which was no longer fit-for-purpose.
It is built near the old Wentworth hospital and raised above the flood levy to maximise views of the Darling River. The design for the new facility was shaped by consultation with and feedback from key stakeholders in the Wentworth community, including Wentworth Health Service staff and the local Aboriginal community.
It is the first hospital in NSW to be 100 per cent powered by electricity.
The location of the new health service provides all inpatient bedrooms with a direct view of the beautiful Darling River, offering a therapeutic environment for patients as they receive treatment and care, as well as their families. The location is significant to local Aboriginal community, allowing connection to Country, while also supporting the wellbeing of all patients, staff and visitors to the health service.
Three art projects feature in the new health service, including a collection of artwork by local students, a Baarkindji-led community weaving piece, and a heritage display honouring the history of the former Wentworth Hospital. This display showcases vintage equipment and items collection over the years and found in the old hospital. Ten framed historical photographic reproductions are also displayed in various areas of the facility, following consultation with staff and the Wentworth Historical Society.
An architectural interpretation of the Darling River’s Red River Gums, or scar trees, is showcased at the entry to the hospital and forms part of the structural support of the entry canopy.
The old hospital will be demolished to make way for a new ambulance drop-off bay for the new facility and landscaped areas for patients and their families.
