The NSW Government is investing $130 million to expand and upgrade crisis accommodation across the state through the Homes NSW Building Crisis Housing Plan. This major initiative will deliver safe, supported spaces for people experiencing homelessness or sudden housing instability.
Supporting people out of crisis
The Building Crisis Housing Plan will support people in urgent housing need access safe, supported spaces where they can recover and rebuild their lives.
- More crisis beds: At least 200 additional beds by 2029 for people experiencing homelessness or facing sudden housing instability.
- Safe, supported housing: Renewal of ageing infrastructure to deliver fit-for-purpose, self-contained crisis accommodation with on-site support services.
- Tailored support for vulnerable communities: Help for those most impacted by homelessness, including women and children escaping domestic and family violence, young people and Aboriginal communities.
This initiative aims to reduce reliance on temporary accommodation such as motels and hotels, providing safer and more appropriate housing options for people in urgent need.
Making homelessness rare, brief and not repeated
This initiative is part of our long-term plan to make homelessness rare, brief and not repeated. It delivers on the Homes for NSW Strategy 2025–2035 and NSW Homelessness Strategy 2025–2035 supported by the $6.6 billion Building Homes for NSW program.
It builds on the momentum of the Homelessness Innovation Fund (HIF) to support innovative accommodation models that deliver more beds for more people in need, quickly.
Local partnerships and support
Delivery will be guided by local collaboration networks to ensure investment meets real community needs. These networks bring together housing, homelessness, health and local services to support rough sleepers and people with complex needs to access and sustain long-term housing.
We will be inviting sector partners to engage with us over the next 12 months as we shape local responses and allocate resources where they’re needed most.
