What is rider training
If you live in an area where motorcycle rider training courses are available (a serviced area), you must complete training with an approved provider to get your rider licence.
There are two levels of training you need to complete:
- Pre-learner – this course is designed for people who have no motorcycle riding experience. The course is conducted in a controlled off-road area. It takes 7 hours and is delivered over 2 days.
- Pre-provisional – this course includes on-road activities as well as activities conducted in a controlled off-road area, and a practical test to assess your riding ability. It is a full-day course (7 hours).
Booking a training course
You need to book directly with your chosen training course provider. You’ll need to pay the course fee when you book.
You should also let the training provider know if you want to learn to ride a motor scooter.

Three-wheeled trikes
A trike-only testing and training pathway enables customers to obtain a licence to ride a trike.
To ride a trike on NSW roads, riders must complete trike training and testing if they do not already hold a rider licence. These courses are delivered with a strong focus on individual attention and safety.
Trike riders are encouraged to visit the Motocap website to compare safety and comfort ratings of gear for their ride.
Three-wheeled scooters
Three-wheeled scooters with a narrow front wheel track are not included in the trike pathway. See The riding test page for more information.
Training and testing on a trike or three-wheeled scooter
Three-wheeled scooters (e.g., Piaggio MP3) with a narrow front wheel track can be used for rider training.
Three-wheeled (Trike) Motorcycles can be used for the trike rider training.
Motor trike means a motor vehicle with 3 wheels, but does NOT include:
- a 2 wheeled motor vehicle with a sidecar attached to it that is supported by a third wheel;
- a 3 wheeled motor vehicle where the two wheels as defined in the Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule - Definitions and Vehicle Categories) 2005 as twinned wheels are considered as one wheel. Examples for this motorcycle type include Piaggio MP3, Yamaha Tricity, Peugeot Metropolis 400 etc.
LAMS approved trike models that can be used for your pre-learner & pre-provisional trike rider training:
- CAN-AM Ryker Rotax 600 ACE
- Kyburz DXP

Contact the rider training provider by phone when booking to confirm details. You will need to bring your own three-wheeled scooter or trike to the training course.

Rider training and testing booking procedures remain unchanged for serviced and unserviced areas.
