Tow truck assessments

Purchased, built or modified a tow truck? Here's how to get your tow truck assessed so it can be approved for use.

Effective from the 18th of November 2022, a Tow Truck Assessment will no longer be required to register a “lift and tow” type tow truck.

This means that you no longer will be required to produce a Tow Truck Assessment Form when establishing a tow truck registration.

Further to this, Tow Trucks can now be inspected for the establishment of registration at a HVAIS station, and do not need to be booked for a HVIS through the Technical Enquiries team.

Tow Trucks are still required to undergo an NHVR HVIS inspection each year for registration renewal. For more information on how to make an NHVR HVIS inspection booking, please see Book a Heavy Vehicle Inspection on the Service NSW website.

For all enquiries related to tow trucks, tow truck driver certificates and tow truck operator licensing, contact Fair Trading.

For operational requirements and permits for heavy tow trucks (with a GVM exceeding 4.5 tonne), contact the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator or see their Heavy tow trucks information sheet.
