Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Feedback on practical examination
General feedback
Students should:
- manipulate language naturally and fluently using a variety of relevant vocabulary and sophisticated grammar
- be prepared to talk about the range of texts from which they have drawn their research
- avoid the use of pre-learned responses which limit the ability to effectively respond to the questions asked by the examiner.
Students can prepare for this examination by:
- ensuring that the topic they have researched allows them to develop and substantiate a point of view
- understanding the requirements of this examination
- demonstrating effective research.
Student Strengths
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate perceptive understanding, analysis and reflection on the issues and relevant justification of the resources used
- actively and confidently participate in the interviews
- justify their arguments consistently and logically throughout the interview
- communicate effectively and fluently with a sophisticated use of vocabulary and a range of sentence structures.
Feedback on written examination
Student should:
- communicate relevant information, ideas and opinions clearly, demonstrating control of a range of language structures when responding in Chinese
- demonstrate a thorough understanding of the syllabus content
- respond within the word limit adequately address each question
- make good use of the 10-minute reading time to read the questions carefully and start mentally planning the answers.
Students can prepare for this examination by:
- reviewing and practising past HSC examination papers
- listening to and reading a range of resources, including books, articles, blogs, news and media sources in Chinese
- practising writing for different purposes, contexts and audiences
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate the ability to compare and contrast ideas using concise language (Q1)
- correctly identify the reasons why young people like to use trendy expressions (Q2)
- demonstrate the ability to summarise, synthesise and analyse information in texts (Q3)
- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the various language features used in the introduction of the future jobs and provide textual evidence (Q4)
- demonstrate a perceptive understanding of the perplexities faced by the writer (Q5)
- correctly identify the traditional Chinese values reflected in the blog and demonstrate the ability to express ideas on the traditional Chinese values perceptively (Q6)
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate a perceptive understanding of the question topic and provide breadth and depth in the treatment of relevant ideas and information
- use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate to the topic
- write appropriate to the audience, context and purpose
- provide a well-structured and coherent response using correct text types
- demonstrate logical thinking and analytical skills in their elaboration.
