About the course
The Chinese in Context syllabus is part of the Collaborative Curriculum and Assessment Framework for Languages (CCAFL). Find out more about the syllabus, including the course description, what students learn, and modules and issues covered.
The CCAFL project is a national collaborative curriculum and assessment model that supports the provision of high quality languages education at the senior secondary level. It provides a common framework for syllabus development and external assessment across small candidature languages that might otherwise be unsustainable.
NESA’s active participation in the CCAFL project ensures the provision of consistent and uniform implementation of high quality language curriculum for those students in NSW wishing to undertake a small candidature language course.
This course develops students’ intercultural and linguistic skills, as well as their knowledge and understanding, through the study of a range of texts.
These texts are related to the following modules:
- young people and their relationships
- traditions and values in a contemporary society
- the nature of work
- the individual as a global citizen
- Australian identity
viewed from one or more of 3 perspectives:
- personal
- community
- international.
The Preliminary and HSC courses have as their organisational focus the study of modules and issues.
Preliminary
The students’ intercultural and linguistic skills, knowledge and understanding of the Chinese language will be developed through the study of a range of texts related to the modules and issues, viewed from one or more of the 3 perspectives (personal, community and international).
HSC
Students will explore in depth an area of interest related to one of the issues through the Personal Investigation.
Young people and their relationships
Students consider their relationships with family, their connections with friends and the influence of international popular youth culture on young people.
Traditions and values in contemporary society
Students consider how the traditions and values of Chinese-speaking communities are maintained in multicultural environments and in a changing society.
The nature of work
Students consider the opportunities afforded bilingual students in Australian and Chinese contexts and how advances in communication technologies and changes in expectations and aspirations affect future study and employment.
The individual as a global citizen
Students consider the notion of ‘global citizen’ and how this concept affects notions of environment, migration and technology, and the impact of global events and trends on the individual in Australia and elsewhere.
Australian identity
Students consider the changing nature of Australian identity, from the viewpoints of a range of groups such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, those who have lived in Australia over generations and migrant communities.
Students explore how identity and culture are expressed in a range of texts in both Chinese and English, including texts relating to:
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures composed or endorsed by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People(s),
- Australian/Chinese composers working in Chinese or English
- Chinese composers in Chinese-speaking countries.
They also investigate how ideas concerning identity have changed over time, and how these changes are reflected in contemporary and/or historical texts. The texts should reflect an appropriate level of linguistic difficulty for students and could include short stories, films, songs, poetry, digital texts and excerpts from longer works.
