Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on practical examination
Interview
Students should:
- choose a topic for Personal Investigation that is related to one of the issues set for study
- ensure they support their research using relevant and quality texts and sources
- discuss and substantiate a point of view effectively by providing evidence from their research
- reflect on their research findings to indicate how the research helped them to express opinion/change opinion or develop a new perception about the issue related to the Personal Investigation
- manipulate language to respond in a coherent and logical way to the questions asked
- use a variety of relevant vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures and expressions
- avoid responding with pre-prepared responses that do not address question asked.
In better responses, students were able to:
- make comments about their research and analyse the information using valid examples
- support ideas and points of view with textual references
- express their ideas and information about the validity and reliability of their texts and research
- use a range of sophisticated vocabulary and language structures appropriate to the issue of their Personal Investigation
- reflect on their findings and express their own opinions on the issues raised in their research.
Areas for students to improve include:
- revising relevant vocabulary, phrases and expressions in order to express opinions about the issues raised in their Personal Investigation
- comparing, evaluating and analysing resources in order to respond with relevant information
- reflecting on their research findings by indicating how the research helped to change their opinions or to develop a new perception in this field or to better prepare them for their future
- referring to their resources when presenting information
- avoiding giving responses which include general knowledge.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- respond in English or Chinese as required by question
- demonstrate their understanding of the issue(s) raised in the text
- include all relevant details and support their response with reference to the text
- use appropriate vocabulary, expressions and language to address the style of writing required by the question
- use appropriate register when responding in Chinese
- use language appropriate to the context, purpose and audience
- respond within the required word and/or character limit
- respond to the number of texts referred to in the question
- apply the conventions of the text type.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate a perceptive understanding of ideas and opinions in the texts
- respond to texts using detailed textual references
- demonstrate excellent knowledge and control of vocabulary and structures
- demonstrate an effective command of English where required
- show cultural understanding and insight regarding values, beliefs and traditions raised in the texts.
Areas for students to improve include:
- providing sufficient and detailed textual references
- improving better control and knowledge of Chinese vocabulary and structures
- answering questions using correct formats for different text types
- using appropriate text type conventions, as required
- aligning the language level used to the required text type so that it is appropriate to audience, context and purpose
- planning their answer so that responses are structured and sequenced, show breadth and depth and address all aspects of the question
- ensuring that responses are clearly linked to the content of texts to demonstrate their understanding
- demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the texts by including clear reference to both speakers’ viewpoints, not just the one with which they personally agree (Q2)
Students should:
- use the conventions of the style of writing required by the question
- use language appropriate for the context, purpose and audience of the question
- use a wide variety of vocabulary, sentence structures and prescribed words and/or characters
- structure the response in a logical and coherent manner
- support their ideas and opinions with appropriate examples
- respond in Chinese as stated in the question
- use appropriate register consistently throughout response
- use vocabulary, expressions and structures that are suitably connected with the issue raised in the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- write to a friend using the conventions of a letter
- analyse the reasons why the parents would not give permission to participate in the sports tournament (Q7)
- express the benefits of participating in the sports tournament (Q7)
- provide different perspectives or suggestions on how to persuade parents to give permission (Q7)
- provide a range of ideas on how to effectively adjust to new trends in science and technology (Q8)
- use a range of vocabulary and expressions relating to the topic of the question.
Areas for students to improve include:
- analysing effectively the impact of the rapid development of science and technology on jobs (Q8)
- providing relevant information and ideas on how to face the trend (Q8)
- using vocabulary, expressions and idiomatic language relevant to issues set for study
- applying the correct register throughout the letter
- structuring their response in a coherent and logical manner to ensure clarity of meaning
- writing to the requested word length.
