Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Prescribed text
Students should:
- provide translations of prescribed texts that are coherent and fluent
- check their translations to ensure that words or phrases have not been omitted
- address all elements of a commentary question in a logical and cohesive manner, focusing only on relevant information
- support their explanation or analysis with relevant and specific examples, explaining the link between the examples given and the aspect being analysed
- use ellipsis or line numbers when quoting more than a few words from an extract, for example, exegi … altius or ‘in lines 1-2’ in order to avoid copying long sections of text
- explain how the Latin supports their argument in their English response, and not leave a section of quoted Latin text to speak for itself.
In better responses, students were able to:
- show understanding of the complex syntax of lines 172–175 in the passage for translation (Q1)
- provide succinct answers for 2 and 3 mark questions (Q2)
- identify key Roman values and provide a balanced analysis of how each poet satirises the perversion of these values (Q3)
- support their analysis with an appropriate selection of a range of specific details from both extracts (Q3).
Areas for students to improve include:
- not making stylistic and rhetorical features key elements of their response unless clearly connected to the question
- using words with precision in their responses.
Non-prescribed text
In better responses, students were able to:
- translate appropriately the impersonal constructions iuvat and quid referat (Q4a)
- translate appropriately the partitive genitive quid… pulchri (Q4a)
- recognise and translate appropriately finis as an accusative plural (Q4a)
- recognise and translate appropriately the indirect question dic quid referat… iugera centum an mille aret? (Q4a)
- demonstrate knowledge of satire by identifying typical features of the genre in the extract (Q4a)
- recognise and translate appropriately natali… die as an ablative of comparison (Q5a)
- recognise and translate appropriately the substantive use of viventi (Q4a) and pugnanti (Q5a).
Areas for students to improve include:
- developing effective dictionary skills (Q4a, Q5a)
- selecting contextually appropriate meanings of vocabulary for the context (Q4a, Q5a)
- identifying words in grammatical agreement (Q4a, Q5).
