Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Feedback on practical examination
Conversation
Students should:
- be prepared to communicate on a variety of topics relating to their personal world
- answer the question asked rather than presenting pre-prepared responses
- express their ideas and opinions and justify their point of view
- elaborate using a variety of vocabulary, phrases and expressions suitable to the question asked
- use a range of tenses and be prepared to reflect on the past, present and future
- manipulate the language to fulfil the requirements of the question
- avoid the repetition of the same vocabulary, phrases, expressions and grammatical structures
- be prepared to be interrupted by the examiner
- use Vietnamese to ask for repetition and/or clarification of the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- respond to a variety of questions by providing a range of ideas and opinions about various aspects of their personal world, for example, theo em, có nhiều cách tiếp cận vấn đề này
- express their ideas on their personal experiences using elements of reflective language, for example, Theo sự hiểu biết và kinh nghiệm của bản thân em; phản ánh lại các trải nghiệm của bản thân em trên phương diện này.
- express personal opinions from a variety of perspectives using connectors and terminology that reveal similarities and differences, for example, Xét trên khía cạnh tích cực/tiêu cực của vấn đề; các điểm tương đồng/dị biệt có thể bao gồm; thường có các quan điểm trái chiều về vấn đề này, chẳng hạn như.
Areas for students to improve include:
- using appropriate vocabulary that relate to topics explored, for example, đề tài môi trường/giao thông, phương tiện giao thông, phí tốn
- providing examples when explaining ideas, for example, chẳng hạn như khi có bất đồng xảy ra giữa bạn bè và bản thân em; nếu việc đó xảy ra, em sẽ
- listening to the questions asked carefully in order to structure the responses appropriately
- using connectives and conjunctions to link ideas, eg. dẫu sao, song, trái lại, thêm vào đó, đặc biệt là, bước tiếp theo em nghĩ sẽ là, tựu chung lại, song song với việc này.
Discussion
In preparation for the Discussion, students should:
- choose a topic that has good quality reference texts and sources available
- prepare for the discussion by referring to at least three texts in their research
- ensure that one of the texts used in their research is a literary source.
During the Discussion examination, students should:
- support their discussion with evidence from the texts that they have sourced
- express and justify opinions and points of view on the in-depth study topic
- reflect on their research findings to help them express opinions or develop new perceptions about their in-depth topic
- manipulate language to respond in a coherent and logical way to the questions asked
- use a variety of relevant vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures and expressions
- avoid responding with pre-prepared responses that do not address the question asked
- avoid relying on general knowledge about the topic of in-depth topic.
In better responses, students were able to:
- answer the questions creatively by manipulating various language structures for different purposes
- demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the topic chosen through providing ideas from a variety of perspectives, for example, đặt để đề tài này trong các góc độ nhìn khác nhau, đề tài này phơi bày ra ý nghĩa của các bản sắc văn hóa và truyền thống của người Việt.
- use vocabulary appropriate to the discussion topic, for example, đề tài phân tích văn học, nhân vật,, tác giả đã dùng nhiều phép ẩn dụ để diễn đạt, nghĩa bóng ở đây ám chỉ, phép nhân hóa mà tác giả đã sử dụng phơi bày
Areas for students to improve include:
- making reference to the texts used in their research when responding to questions
- ensuring that correct intonation and pronunciation is maintained throughout the sentences in order to communicate the meaning intended, for example the verbs at the end of the sentence
- presenting their own opinion about the topic and reliability of the texts
- using the language of reflection, comparison and justification
- analysing the research by comparing and contrasting between the ways the topic is explored in different texts.
Feedback on written examination
Listening and Responding
Students should:
- make notes in the Candidate’s Notes column on the right-hand side of the page
- read the question carefully and respond to all parts of the question
- support their responses with relevant evidence from the text
- transcribe their response on to the lines, using the space allocated beneath the question
- use the number of lines as an indication of the required length of the response
- support their responses with reference to relevant content and language, using their own words
- avoid translating the text as part of their response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- fully explore the texts and understand the requirements of the questions
- support opinions with elaboration and text references
- draw conclusions using evidence from texts
- analyse the language techniques used in the texts and provide examples when required.
Areas for students to improve include:
- avoiding translating texts
- avoiding using direct quotes as answers
- identifying keywords to better understanding the task requirements
- supporting the ideas/opinions with relevant text references.
Reading and Responding
Part A
Students should:
- read the title, questions and the whole text before responding
- use only the lines or space beneath the question for the response
- support their responses with reference to content and language, using their own words
- be succinct in their responses, addressing the relevant details required by the question and avoiding repetition
- focus on key words in the question, for example, ‘how’, ‘why’, ‘explain’, ‘justify’ and respond in relation to the context of the text
- read the whole text in order to demonstrate understanding of relevant information and ideas
- identify the key issue(s) and provide examples to substantiate their response when asked to analyse or evaluate information
- draw a conclusion or justify a point of view using their own words
- provide a succinct response of main points or ideas when asked to summarise
- avoid providing a literal translation of text
- use the dictionary appropriately to find the correct meaning of the word(s) or expressions in context.
In better responses, students were able to:
- include references and specific relevant information to justify their answers
- identify keywords in the questions and provide correct answers accordingly.
Areas for students to improve include:
- presenting answers with full explanation using relevant references from the content and the language features in the text.
Part B
Students should:
- respond to the question asked in relation to the text
- read the entire text in order to respond fully to the question
- use the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- demonstrate understanding of the whole text in their response and not just respond to questions asked in the text
- focus on all relevant information and key points raised in the text in order to respond to comments made, requests for advice, issues discussed, and observations made
- use the appropriate register throughout the response
- provide a creative and authentic response in relation to the text and question
- use a variety of vocabulary and expressions and a range of grammatical structures
- plan effectively to organise their thoughts, paying attention to purpose, audience, context and the type of text required in question
- edit their work to ensure clarity of the response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- fully understand all the issues mentioned in the stimulus text (the original email) including the important detail “Bàn với hai bác rồi cho mình hay nhé.” (Please let me know after speaking to your parents)
- write a reply email with relevant responses creatively.
Areas for students to improve include:
- adhering to the length requirement of the task
- avoiding using irrelevant ideas/information
- avoiding listing details/ideas
- repetition of the same idea.
Writing in Language
Students should:
- address all parts of the question
- use the appropriate register and conventions of the type of text
- commence and conclude appropriately
- use the correct tense for the requirements of the question
- sequence their response logically for maximum effect
- use the dictionary effectively by selecting vocabulary to suit the context
- proofread and edit work
- adhere to the suggested word length.
In better responses, students were able to:
- present more than one idea with elaboration and examples.
Areas for students to improve include:
- presenting and explaining a number of “challenges” faced by young Australian people today rather than “young people in general” (b)
- presenting and explaining why “understanding the Vietnamese traditional culture is important” rather than talking about Vietnamese traditional culture in general or about the “Cultural week” (a)
- organising ideas using appropriate vocabulary/linking words/paragraphs.
