Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Feedback on practical examination
Conversation
Students should:
- be prepared to communicate about a variety of topics relating to their personal world
- elaborate and provide relevant details to address the questions in a way that engages with the examiner
- use a range of vocabulary, expressions and language structures to respond appropriately to the questions
- provide information, express ideas and comment on their personal world
- be prepared to respond to questions from a different perspective
- be prepared to respond to questions that relate to past, present and future aspects of their personal world
- avoid repetition of the same vocabulary, phrases and expressions
- manipulate the language to fulfil the requirements of the question
- be prepared to be interrupted by the examiner
- use Vietnamese to ask for repetition and/or clarification of the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- speak clearly with excellent pronunciation, syntax, register and intonation
- answer the questions with minimal hesitation, allowing the conversation to flow at a good pace
- answer questions with relevant information and in some depth, for example, to communicate feelings, provide opinions and justify their responses
- manipulate the response to address the requirements of the question
- elaborate on their responses without extra prompts from the examiner
- respond in full sentences, using compound and complex sentences
- use language structures and features effectively to enhance their responses
- demonstrate excellent knowledge of a wide repertoire of vocabulary
- accurately use tenses as required by the question.
Areas for students to improve include:
- providing explanations supported with relevant examples
- using linking words to connect ideas smoothly such as Thứ nhất, thứ hai, đầu tiên, sau đó ...
- providing responses logically and clearly.
Discussion
In preparation for the Discussion, students should:
- select a topic that allows in-depth discussion
- choose a topic that has quality reference texts and sources available
- prepare for the discussion by referring to at least three texts in their research
- ensure that one of the texts used in their research is a literary source.
During the Discussion examination, students should:
- support their discussion with evidence from the texts that they have sourced
- express and justify opinions and points of view on the in-depth study topic
- reflect on their research findings to help them express opinions or develop new perceptions about their in-depth topic
- manipulate language to respond in a coherent and logical way to the questions asked
- use a variety of relevant vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures and expressions
- avoid responding with prepared responses that do not address the question asked
- avoid relying on general knowledge of the topic.
In better responses, students were able to:
- ensure that the chosen sources were relevant to the topic of the study
- refer to their sources and comment on how each source contributed to their understanding of the in-depth topic
- discuss how their research impacted on their views and helped them gain a better understanding of the topic
- develop analytical approach to texts studied rather than memorise information from the texts
- provide logical and well-structured responses to questions
- come to insightful conclusions regarding issues raised in their research
- use specific vocabulary and expressions relating to the topic
- use complex sentences and suitable idiomatic expressions to strengthen and support their opinions
- respond using a high level of grammatical accuracy, sophisticated vocabulary and expressions
- manipulate the language effectively to support their ideas and justify their point of view.
Areas for students to improve include:
- understanding the difference between citing resources and using examples from those resources to answer the question. Em có ý kiến này từ tài liệu …, Tài liệu này giúp em hiểu rằng ..., Tài liệu ... đã giúp em hình thành quan điểm ..., giúp em tin rằng/kết luận rằng ...
- making detailed reference to their resources and providing examples to enhance the quality of their response trong tài liệu ... tác giả đã đưa ra/trình bày/chứng minh rằng ..., thông qua những thông số/số liệu/chứng cớ ...

Feedback on written examination
Listening and Responding
Students should:
- make notes in the Candidate’s Notes column on the right-hand side of the page
- read the question carefully and respond to all parts of the question
- support their responses with relevant evidence from the text
- transcribe their response onto the lines, using the space allocated beneath the question
- use the number of lines as an indication of the required length of the response
- support their responses with reference to relevant content and language, using their own words
- avoid translating the text as part of their response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- correctly identify the requirements of the question, for example, summarise (Q2), how likely (Q3) and to what extent (Q4)
- answer the questions using relevant information from the text (Q4, Q5)
- understand and analyse the listening text holistically, such as providing reasons why young people have changed career
- support their responses with detailed and relevant references to both language and content (Q5)
- effectively interpret information to answer the questions with clear references to the texts
- link the effect of language techniques to address question requirements (Q5).
Areas for students to improve include:
- avoiding the use of direct quotes as answers
- answering questions in English only in Part A and in Vietnamese in Part B
- answering in full meaningful sentences rather than listing ideas or vocabulary
- analysing the effect language techniques rather than just listing them
- avoiding the translation of sections of the text.
Reading and Responding – Part A
Students should:
- read the title, the questions and the whole text before responding
- use only the lines or space beneath the question for their response
- support their responses with reference to content and language, using their own words
- be succinct in their responses, addressing the relevant details required by the question and avoiding repetition
- focus on key words in the question, for example, ‘how’, ‘why’, ‘explain’, ‘justify’ and respond in relation to the context of the text
- identify the key issue(s) and provide examples to substantiate their response when asked to analyse or evaluate information
- draw a conclusion or justify a point of view using their own words
- provide a succinct response of the main points or ideas when asked to summarise
- avoid providing a literal translation of text
- use the dictionary appropriately to find the correct meaning of the word(s) or expressions in context.
In better responses, students were able to:
- answer the questions using relevant information from the text with examples that support their answer (Q8, Q9)
- understand and analyse the reading text holistically (Q8b)
- support their responses with detailed and relevant references to both language and content (Q8b, Q9c)
- effectively interpret information to answer the questions with clear references to the texts
- analyse the effect of language techniques to address question requirements (Q8b, Q9c)
- use correct adjectives to identify feelings with explanation and examples (Q8b).
Areas for students to improve include:
- avoiding the use of direct quotes as answers
- answering questions in English
- answering in full meaningful sentences rather than listing ideas or vocabulary
- analysing the effect language techniques rather than just listing them
- avoiding the translation of sections of the text.
Part B
Students should:
- read the whole text in order to respond fully to the question
- plan effectively to organise their thoughts, paying attention to context, purpose and audience, as well as the type of text required by the question
- use the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- demonstrate understanding of the whole text in their response
- focus on all relevant information and key points raised in the text in order to respond to comments made, requests for advice, issues discussed, and observations made
- provide a creative and authentic response in relation to the text and the question
- use the appropriate register throughout the response
- use a variety of vocabulary and expressions and a range of grammatical structures
- edit their work to ensure clarity of the response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate an excellent understanding of the whole text, include elaborating on all key details
- manipulate language authentically and creatively, for example: the use of rhetorical question in ‘Phải chăng là do lâu rồi mình chưa đi du lịch nên mới thấy thích như vậy?’
- elaborate on key details with a high degree of creativity, for example, ‘Fiji là một điểm đến trong mơ của Bình! Mình muốn xem văn hóa Fiji giống gì và khác gì so với văn hóa Úc và Việt Nam nên đây là một cơ hội cực kì tốt để mình vừa thư giãn, nghe nhạc dân tộc vừa được học thêm nhiều điều mới mẻ’
- adhere to the conventions and style of letter writing with appropriate language and structure.
Areas for students to improve include:
- reading the entire text and highlight the key information
- sequencing and structuring of ideas appropriately
- responding to the ideas in the text rather than attempting to write a personal creative text.
Writing in Vietnamese
Students should:
- read the question carefully and address all parts of the question
- plan their response to ensure a clear structure and sequence
- use the appropriate register and conventions of the type of text required
- manipulate the language to suit the requirements of the task
- commence and conclude appropriately
- use a variety of tenses, phrases and structures appropriate to the requirements of the question
- sequence their response logically for maximum effect
- use the dictionary effectively by selecting vocabulary to suit the context
- adhere to the suggested word length
- proofread and edit their work.
In better responses, students were able to:
- read the question carefully to correctly identify the audience, purpose and task requirements
- adhere to the conventions writing style of a speech
- write using paragraphs and linking words and expressions to organise their ideas in a coherent manner
- use appropriate language relevant to the requirements of the task (informative and persuasive)
- provide a breadth of ideas and elaborate on these ideas with authenticity and creativity
- recognise the meaning of a ‘learning journey’ and share their thoughts and experiences as they travel through this journey. For example, ‘khi mới đặt chân đến Úc, tôi đã thật sự bị ngỡ ngàng và choáng ngợp với môi trường học tập ở đây ... Sau khi học được một năm, tôi bắt đầu dần quen với trường lớp bằng cách khắc phục những điểm yếu của mình như vấn đề ngôn ngữ Anh ...’ (Q11a)
- acknowledge the concerns of Vietnamese parents whilst also providing opinions as to why it is also a good idea for students to go out on the weekend. For example, ‘Tôi hiểu tại sao ba mẹ lại không muốn cho học sinh trung học đi chơi vào cuối tuần vì họ sợ rằng .... Tuy nhiên, bên cạnh những lo lắng thì tôi thấy rằng việc được đi ra ngoài chơi vào cuối tuần cũng có lợi lắm chứ. Chẳng hạn như ...’ (Q11b).
Areas for students to improve include:
- reading the question and correctly identifying the task requirement (context, audience, purpose)
- organising ideas with elaboration and illustrative examples
- adhering to the text type format (article and not advertisement or speech)
- elaborating on each idea in a separate paragraph with examples and details
- organising and sequencing ideas and information coherently and effectively
- manipulating language with authenticity and creativity
- organising ideas/opinions/comments by using paragraphs and linking words, for example, Thứ nhất, thứ nhì, cuối cùng, tuy nhiên, vì vậy.
