The new Aboriginal Languages K–10 Syllabus is now available on the Digital Curriculum.
The new Aboriginal Languages K–10 (2022) syllabus is to be taught from 2024.
2023 Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2024 Start teaching new syllabus for:
- Schools with a K–6 program
- Mandatory 100 hours of a Language in Years 7–10
- Year 9 elective.
Students who commenced the 100-hour or 200-hour elective course in 2023 may continue to study the Aboriginal Languages K–10 Syllabus (2003) in 2024.
Key features:
- Content is now available in two language pathways – Language Revival and First Language, meaning students whose first language is an Aboriginal Language or Torres Strait Islander Language can continue their language learning in the NSW Curriculum for the first time.
- Students develop communication skills in an Aboriginal language and understand the relationships between language, Country and culture.
- Students learn about protocols for how languages are built, and techniques used by Aboriginal Language communities to do this.
- New content on language awareness gives students opportunities to learn about how Aboriginal Languages are being revived, maintained, and strengthened.
- New guidance on the need to involve Aboriginal Language communities and knowledge holders when introducing and teaching the syllabus in schools.
