Rent receipts from agents and landlords
If rent is paid in person (other than by cheque) landlords or agent must give tenants a receipt for each rent payment at the time the payment is made.
Receipts can be sent to a tenant using an email address the tenant has given to the landlord or agent.
Rent receipts must show the:
- name of the person who received the rent (or on whose behalf they received it). This may be the agent or the landlord
- name of the person who paid the rent (or on whose behalf it was paid). This is likely the tenant
- address of the rented property
- date rent was paid
- amount of rent paid
- period of time which the rent covers.
If rent is paid by cheque, the landlord or agent must make the receipt available for collection by the tenant or give the receipt to the tenant.
These rent receipt requirements do not apply to public housing tenants (for example, where the landlord is Homes NSW).
The landlord or agent must keep a record of rent paid. If requested by the tenant, they must provide a written statement showing the rent record for a specified period within 7 days of a request, unless the landlord has previously provided a statement for the same period.
