About this location
It’s all about family fun at the Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in Knockrow (about 20 minutes south of Byron), where animals, kids’ activities and sweet treats are a winning combination as far as the little ones are concerned.
Formerly the Macadamia Castle, this iconic venue has been entertaining families since 1975. It’s home to more than 150 animals, from kangaroos and koalas to snakes and crocodiles. You’ll find a bird aviary, a baby chick house and a reptile display, as well as lots of keeper talks and animal encounters, ranging from farmyard feeding and rabbit petting to the Owl Experience, in which Socrates the barn owl will land on your gloved hand. During the school holidays, kids can even become a keeper for a day.
The sanctuary also has a treehouse playground with a flying fox, a waterpark, an 18-hole mini golf course, lots of macadamia goodies, a café that sells some legendary pancakes, and a bar for grown-ups to sample local beer and cocktails.
