About this location
Hamilton Hume (1797-1873) was born at Toongabbie, near Parramatta on the 19th of June, 1797. Hume was a superior bushman and prominent Australian explorer. He led the first Europeans to the Yass plains in 1821. Hume was a leader in The Hume and Hovell expedition, Lake George to Melbourne in 1824 and occupied the land grant of Yass in 1828.
Hamilton Hume died at his home at Cooma Cottage on 19 April, 1873.
The original headstone was replaced in 1879 on instructions from his wife Elizabeth. This is located in the Anglican section of the cemetery. There are signs that direct visitors to the site, where his wife also lays beside him.
