The Penrith Regional Gallery, home of the Lewers Bequest, would have to be one of Australia’s most beautiful regional galleries.
Set in heritage gardens on the western bank of the Nepean River at Emu Plains, the gallery was established in 1981 at the former home of sculptor Gerald Lewers and his wife, painter Margo Lewers – two of the leading artists in the development of modernism in Australia. The two houses on the property, which for many years were the scene of spontaneous parties, passionate debate and creativity, are now gallery spaces.
As well as a dynamic range of exhibitions and events, the gallery offers tours, workshops and lots of activities for kids. While you’re there, grab a drink and a bite to eat at Cafe at Lewers. Run by the young team from the Artful Food Co, it’s open for morning and afternoon tea, breakfast and lunch, and offers a seasonal menu in an idyllic setting in the gardens.
You’ll find the gallery along the Great River Walk.
