The Savannah Goanna was installed in front of the Urana Bowling Club in 2018. This Federation Council initiative, perched on a large rock near the tennis courts, required some fine-tuning by creator Andrew Whitehead in order to fit on the rock. Savannah was inspired by the bark drawings of Yolngu artist, David Malangi, that are illustrated on the first Australian one dollar note (1966).
Andrew Whitehead lives locally in Urana and is renowned for his beautifully crafted scrap metal sculptures. North of the Murray is home to many of his impressive artworks. Just a short stroll from Savannah you can visit the Courthouse Museum and see more about the creation of Andrews sculptures as well as dive in to the history of the Urana Aquatic Centre and the town's famous people.
