NSW Registrar Amit Padhiar said the Registry was providing free birth certificates for eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at a Pathfinders’ sign-up event in Redfern on 18 and 19 May 2022.
“Without a birth certificate many people can face challenges enrolling in school, securing jobs, housing, licences or accessing government support, Mr Padhiar said.
“In some situations, barriers like financial cost and low levels of identification prevent people from accessing replacements of this critical form of identification.
“We are committed to breaking down these barriers to ensure government services and support is accessible to everyone.
“When we make it easier to get birth certificates, we also make it easier for people to access the support they need and promote greater equality in society."
The Registry has provided more than 1695 free birth certificates through Pathfinders since 2020.
“Once people have access to their birth certificate they can look forward to verifying their identity on the go with a digital version launching later this year,” Mr Padhiar said.
“People will soon be able to securely access a Digital Birth Certificate anywhere at any time making it easier to access services and support.”
