Sarah Groat is the winner of the 2023 Jennifer Bates Memorial Award, a finalist for the 2023 Zanda McDonald Award and mentor for the Sydney Royal Young Rural Woman Award.

Sarah Groat works as a Development Officer in the Farms of the Future program for the Department of Regional NSW (DRNSW). Her work spans over 2 million hectares in the Griffith, Leeton and Carrathool areas.
“What truly motivates me and gives purpose to my work is the pursuit of meaningful change,” Sarah said.
“Farms of the Future presents a multitude of opportunities where I can foster lasting positive transformations for the communities as well as for our environment.”
“Within this role, my primary focus lies in facilitating training sessions and post-training support sessions for farmers, aiding them in the creation of Agtech monitoring plans tailored to their specific farming business needs.”
“By facilitating Agtech training for farmers, I assist them in reclaiming precious time, allowing them to invest time back into their families, recreational pursuits or focus on enhancing the sustainability and profitability of their businesses through the adoption of digital technologies.”
The adoption of new technologies not only promotes climatic resilience which is essential in the current environment, it helps farmers build capacity and future-proof their operations.
“If there was one transformation I could inspire within the farming community, it would be for farmers to recognise and amplify the value they place on their time.”

Sarah grew up on a mixed farming enterprise near Rankins Springs, NSW, a picturesque town nestled between West Wyalong and Hay. She recently made the transition from the farm to work in the closest service centre, Griffith. This flexibility to work from different locations is something she greatly values.
“Having accumulated over 11 years of professional experience in the agricultural industry, my career path has consistently revolved around supporting farmers and contributing to the growth of the agricultural sector.”
“Looking ahead, the opportunity to work alongside talented individuals, creatively solving problems while leading and inspiring a team, holds great appeal to me. Making a tangible difference within the agricultural sector is an ambition I am excited to strive towards.”
Sarah is deeply passionate about empowering young women in rural and remote communities to become leaders. She has mentored several young women through the Sydney Royal Young Rural Women Award.
“By showcasing the possibilities, potential and opportunities available to them in traditionally male-dominated industries and regions, I aim to inspire and encourage their pursuit of excellence.”
