Construction starts on Tamworth Hospital palliative care unit expansion
Construction is underway to double the size of the Nikola Palliative Care Unit at Tamworth Hospital, marking an important step in enhancing access to end-of-life care for the New England region.
Minister for Regional Health, Ryan Park joined health staff and the project team for a sod turn event for the health facility, which is being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $93 million World Class End of Life Care program.
The World Class End of Life Program is delivering new or redeveloped palliative care facilities across NSW including at Wyong, Nepean, Westmead and Orange hospitals, in addition to Tamworth.
The expanded Tamworth unit will feature six new private rooms with ensuites and outdoor areas designed to create a warm, home-like environment for patients, families and carers. Three courtyards will provide green spaces for reflection and connection, including a private outdoor area, while an overnight room will enable additional family members to stay close to their loved ones.
Developed in consultation with Hunter New England Health District palliative care staff, carers and community members, the new facility will support staff in delivering specialist care and promote privacy, comfort and dignity for people with life-limiting illnesses who have complex symptoms or end-of-life care needs.
The existing Nikola Palliative Care Unit will also be refreshed to ensure it blends seamlessly with the new part of the building.
Construction is expected to be completed in late 2026. The project is being delivered by Health Infrastructure, in partnership with Hunter New England Local Health District, and builder North Construction.
