A towering achievement

Our community deserves the best facilities available to be cared for, now and well into the future.

If you’ve visited the Penrith area it’s pretty hard to miss the new hospital building. Two years ago I stood on its foundations and now it soars 14 storeys sky high.

The $1 billion Nepean Redevelopment, both Stage 1 and 2, is transforming the way communities in Penrith, Blue Mountains and beyond access care - bringing world-class services much closer to home.

While our technology and design is distinctly 21st century, our new Nepean Hospital continues centuries’ old traditions.

The very first hospital in Penrith, established in the 1800s, was community run. Staff lived locally. The community helped shape and deliver services. There was a focus on delivering the best care, innovating and growing services. Medical procedures may have changed, but this ethos has not.

The new Nepean Hospital and its redevelopment is our commitment to continuing this vision. It’s a towering symbol of how we work together with our staff, patients, consumers and the community actively engaging them in the design of the new Hospital and services it will provide. Our community continues to define and shape our health services for the future.

As one of the tallest hospital buildings in Australia, the Stage 1 tower includes an expanded Emergency Department, 18 birthing suites, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, more than 16 operating theatres, 200 additional beds, and a brand new rooftop helipad.

This may be one of the most advanced hospitals in Australia but it’s also a distinctly personal space.

There are comfortable areas for patients and their families to relax and talk. Floor to ceiling windows offering spectacular views of the Blue Mountains and Nepean Valley. Gardens and artworks providing escapist realities that bring joy and wonder. It’s a hospital that is the product of the imagination, commitment and life experiences it absorbs.

It’s been several months since we have moved into our new home and welcomed our first patients. There’s nothing more motivating than seeing amazed faces as people wander the corridors, expressions shared by both patients and staff. When you’re told it feels like a five-star hotel you know you’ve done things right. This is the hospital Western Sydney needs, and the one that it deserves. Bring on Stage 2.
