Nepean Hospital registered nurse, Victoria Trevitt knows only too well how much the kindness and compassion of nurses can improve the hospital experience.
As an unwell child who spent a lot of time in hospital, she found comfort in the nurses who cared for her.
“I loved how caring they were and that it was their job to be there for people when they most needed them. I would often be scared but with just a couple of words from the nurses, I would feel so much better,” says Victoria.
“I was probably ten years old when I knew I wanted to be a nurse.”
As one of the new graduate nurses to join Nepean Hospital earlier this year, Victoria is now living that dream.
While her first few weeks have involved a steep learning curve, Victoria says she’s thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.
“Nepean Hospital is a great hospital for new grad nurses,” she says.
“Everyone at Nepean has been so supportive and welcoming. I’ve been blown away at how good it’s been so far.”
While Victoria looks forward to the year ahead and a range of hospital rotations, she knows that her own patient experience will motivate and inspire her nursing efforts.
“I’ll look back at my own experience and at how comforted I felt in moments when I was scared and a nurse was kind to me. It gives me so much satisfaction to see my patients cared for in the same way,” says Victoria.
“It takes a very special sort of person to do nursing. It can be quite stressful but so rewarding at the same time. If you have a genuine care and passion for people, it’s one hundred per cent a job you’ll find fulfillment in.”
