We want our staff to explore beyond what they know. It’s important they have our support to follow their passion to develop the next revolutionary thing that makes a difference, that delivers care more compassionately, more efficiently or more effectively.
We’re incredibly proud to have NBMLHD known as a growing hub for innovation where clinicians and professional staff conduct ground-breaking, research that pushes the boundaries of traditional health care and improves the service experience for our patients and their families. Our record speaks for itself.
At Nepean Hospital state-of-the-art robotic technology has slashed recovery times of patients following major surgery. I have the honour of leading a team of surgeons who are reducing the average length of stay for a prostatectomy from 8 days to just 1.3 – a remarkable achievement.
Globally renowned researcher and cardiologist, Professor Kazuaki Negishi is conducting a potentially life-saving study that will trial a novel technique called sonothrombolysis which may help to salvage heart muscle in patients experiencing a heart attack.
Our award winning ‘Patient’s Voice’ project is empowering patients to provide feedback to staff about their health care journey by delivering handover by the bedside. As a result, patient falls are down, complaints have decreased and over 80% of patients say their voice is being valued.
We’ve also developed a unique blood test (HIST) to predict which patients with influenza are likely to go on to have serious, life-threatening complications. Patented in several countries, the test will support clinicians around the world to make informed clinical decisions about a patient’s care before they are at risk of rapid deterioration.
We’re improving the experiences for those who are requiring the most urgent of care by employing patient experience managers in our Emergency Department. By addressing the concerns of patients before they see a doctor, we’re reducing anxiety and helping patients navigate an often stressful situation.
I am proud that at NBMLHD we are cultivating a culture of research and innovation because we know it makes a difference in the lives of our patients and the families.
I’ve seen it firsthand with my patients and I see a future where many more patients across our District will receive help from the innovations we are working on today.
