Primary K–6
New Creative Arts K–6 Syllabus (2024)
Implementation from 2027
The new Creative Arts K–6 Syllabus (2024) is to be implemented from 2027.
- 2025 and 2026 Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus.
- 2027 Start teaching new syllabus.
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual circumstances.

Key features
- The new K–6 curriculum is aligned to the latest evidence and research.
- For the first time the K–6 curriculum has been developed cohesively to support depth of learning and enhance student engagement.
- The new syllabuses will complement and strengthen literacy and numeracy with close alignment to new English and Mathematics K–10 syllabuses.
- The Creative Arts K–6 syllabus makes explicit the distinct body of knowledge, creative and critical practices and individual ways of understanding the world through Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts.
- In Creative Arts K–6, students’ knowledge and understandings of cultures and contexts builds progressively through the stages of learning, with consideration of historical, cultural, social, personal and contemporary contexts.

The new Dance 7–10 Syllabus (2023) is to be implemented from 2026.

- Students develop their personal and social capability by working collaboratively with others to achieve individual and collective goals.
- Life Skills outcomes and content provide opportunities for students with intellectual disability.

Key features
- Interrelated focus areas of Performing, Listening and Composing provide students with experience of the creative process as an individual and in collaboration with others.
- Content provides students with essential knowledge, skills and understanding to become thoughtful, informed and innovative musicians.
- Repertoire requirements provide students with opportunities to meaningfully engage with a broad range of music including the music of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
- Content supports inclusion of diverse learners including students who are D/deaf or hard of hearing.
- Inclusion of a depth study in Stage 5 encourages active student engagement.
- Inclusion of safe instrumental and vocal practices and safety protocols.
- Life Skills content provides opportunities for students with intellectual disability to make real world connections as well as music for personal enjoyment and expression.

Key features
- The NSW Government is continuing its delivery of an evidence-based world class curriculum with a new Visual Arts syllabus for Years 7 to 10.
- The new syllabuses are more manageable for teachers. Content is clearer and has been streamlined with the number of outcomes reduced, allowing teachers more time to focus on essential learning and for students to develop a depth of understanding.
- Revised content provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of the Cultural importance of visual arts in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' Histories and Cultures reflecting connections to Country/Place and Community(ies).
- There is a more inclusive focus which supports the diversity of learners, using a multisensory approach to art making and art critical and historical studies.
- Under the NSW Government’s revised timeline, schools will now have more than two years to get to know the new syllabus, before teaching it from 2027. Previously teachers had just one year.
- Life Skills outcomes and content provide access for students with intellectual disability.
- The syllabus is available on the Digital Curriculum website, allowing parents and carers to easily access content and practical tips so they can support their child’s learning.
