Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Feedback on practical examination
Interview
Students should:
- choose a topic for Personal Investigation that is related to one of the issues set for study
- ensure they support their research using relevant and quality texts and sources
- discuss and substantiate a point of view effectively by providing evidence from their research
- reflect on their research findings to help them express opinions or develop new perceptions about their Personal Investigation
- reflect on their research findings to indicate how the research helped them to express opinion/change opinion or develop a new perception about the issue related to the Personal Investigation
- manipulate language to respond in a coherent and logical way to the questions asked
- use a variety of relevant vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures and expressions
- avoid responding with pre-prepared responses that do not address the question asked.
In better responses, students were able to:
- present and support their understanding of the way texts present particular ideas within the topic
- present a variety of ideas and information that demonstrated an in-depth understanding of the topic/issue investigated
- reflect on the process of their personal investigation
- use appropriate vocabulary and expressions for the issue(s) of the Personal Investigation.
Areas for students to improve include:
- referring to the texts used in their research when responding to questions
- ensuring that correct intonation and pronunciation is maintained throughout the sentences in order to communicate the meaning intended, for example, the verbs at the end of the sentence
- reflecting on the findings presented in the texts on personal/community/global perspectives
- presenting their own opinion about the topic and reliability of the texts
- using the language of reflection, comparison and justification
- analysing the research by comparing and contrasting between the ways the topic is explored in different texts.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- respond in English or Korean as required by question
- demonstrate their understanding of the issue(s) raised in the text
- include all relevant details and support their response with reference to the text
- use appropriate vocabulary, expressions and language to address the style of writing required by the question
- use appropriate register when responding in Korean
- respond within the required word and/or character limit
- respond to the number of texts referred to in the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- synthesise information from two texts and two differing points of view
- give breadth and depth of information, ideas and opinions in their responses
- competently manipulate language structures to suit to audience, context and purpose and use a range of vocabulary.
Areas for students to improve include:
- using appropriate text type conventions, as required
- aligning the language level used to the required text type so that it is appropriate to audience, context and purpose
- planning their answer so that responses are structured and sequenced, show breadth and depth and address all aspects of the question
- ensuring that responses are clearly linked to the content of texts to demonstrate their understanding
- demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the texts by including clear reference to speakers’ viewpoints, not just the one with which they personally agreed
- making clear reference to texts to demonstrate their ability to synthesise information and ideas
- identifying the issues raised in the text and providing suggestions, not simply describing the issues
- addressing both content and language features in their answers.
Students should:
- use the conventions of the style of writing required by the question
- use language appropriate for the context, purpose and audience of the question
- use a wide variety of vocabulary, sentence structures and prescribed words and/or characters
- structure the response in a logical and coherent manner
- support their ideas and opinions with appropriate examples
- respond in Korean as stated in the question
- use appropriate register consistently throughout response
- use vocabulary, expressions and structures that are suitably connected with the issue raised in the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- present and explain ideas logically and with relevant examples that support their point of view in the essay
- show breadth and depth in their treatment of the topic
- demonstrate cultural insight and understanding in their responses.
Areas for students to improve include:
- planning responses so that they are structured and sequenced, and show both breadth and depth in the treatment of the topic
- using a variety of language structures to express a variety of ideas
- adhering to the ja length required by the question.
