Strengthening Conditional Accreditation
NESA has updated the NSW Teacher Accreditation (TA) Manual to strengthen the requirements for Conditional accreditation. These updates help to ensure teachers entering NSW classrooms are well-prepared and progressing toward full qualification requirements.
Teachers already Conditionally accredited in NSW will not be impacted by these changes.
- Effective
- 1 March 2026
- Reference
- NESA 3/26
Who needs to read this?
- Principals/Service Directors (Teacher Accreditation Delegates)
- Accreditation Supervisors
- Deputy principals
- Assistant principals
- ITE providers
What is changing in the TA Manual?
- LANTITE requirement: applicants must pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) before Conditional accreditation is granted.
- Annual updates: all Conditionally accredited teachers will be required to provide updates to NESA on their Initial Teacher Education (ITE) coursework progression (until degree is completed).
- Degree-only pathway: applicants for Conditional accreditation through the degree-only pathway must provide evidence of a formal offer of employment, excluding casual roles, for a minimum of one term (or equivalent).
- Supporting a reduced teaching load: NESA recommends that teachers who are studying and working full-time have a reduced teaching load of up to 0.6 FTE.
Applicants applying for Conditional accreditation through the degree-only pathway have up to 24-months to pass LANTITE and submit their first annual update on coursework progression. This flexibility recognises the unique circumstances of degree-only applicants employed in schools.
Why has NESA introduced these changes?
These updates aim to ensure that teachers entering the profession through Conditional accreditation are progressing to complete their full qualification requirements and meet the standards expected of the profession. Specifically, they aim to:
- improve teacher preparation: strengthening classroom readiness by having teachers meet literacy and numeracy standards before accreditation
- support ITE students to meet qualification requirements: annual updates help monitor progress and identify support needs for timely completion
- provide clarity: clearer employment parameters for applicants applying for Conditional accreditation through the degree-only pathway
- support ITE student wellbeing: recommendations for reduced teaching load for teachers still studying
- maintain flexibility: case-by-case consideration for urgent staffing needs.
When will these changes apply?
The new employment parameters for applicants applying for Conditional accreditation through the degree-only pathway and the requirement to provide NESA with an annual course progression update will apply from 1 March 2026.
The strengthened requirement to pass LANTITE prior to Conditional accreditation being granted will be effective from 1 August 2026. This lead time is designed to give ITE students, providers, and employers sufficient opportunity to plan and meet the new requirement before applying for Conditional accreditation.
