Program objective
In NSW, Closing the Gap is a program in which decision making and design are shared with the Aboriginal community as represented by the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (CAPO).
The grant relates to socio-economic outcomes included in the 2022-2024 NSW Implementation Plan for Closing the Gap.

The function of the grant is to provide for the delivery of 5 initiatives to contribute to achieving those outcomes.
Specifically, the grant relates to the following outcomes for which the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure is responsible for leading, coordinating and reporting on:
- Socio-Economic Outcome 9: Aboriginal people secure appropriate, affordable housing that is aligned with their priorities and need.
- Socio-Economic Outcome 15: Aboriginal people maintain a distinctive cultural, spiritual, physical and economic relationship with their land and waters.
The 5 funded initiatives to contribute to achieving the above outcomes and to be delivered using the grant are:
- Developing culturally responsive building standards and design principles for Aboriginal housing in partnership with Aboriginal communities.
- Trial Aboriginal Community Housing Provider delivery of outcomes focused housing model.
- Establish a task force to negotiate redesign of the native title and land rights systems.
- Exploratory study of innovative models for increasing land ownership.
- Provide improved support following land transfers.
The grant was subject to the governance and decision-making framework outlined in the 2022-2024 NSW Implementation Plan for Closing the Gap.
