Discovery
In May 2020, Aboriginal stone artefacts were found on the Griffith Base Hospital site. This is a very important discovery for the Aboriginal community and the history of Griffith.
First excavation
271 small stone artefacts measuring 14mm to 28mm were located during the first archaeological investigation.
They were mostly found in gravel, which is believed to have been brought to the health campus for landscaping.
Second excavation
Artefacts found at a separate location to the gravel appear to be evidence of an Aboriginal campsite, which could be thousands of years old.
Bipolar flakes
The artefacts are described as bipolar flakes, a specific flaking technique used to make stone tools from very small pebbles. The tools were used as cutting and scraping implements.
Safekeeping and long-term management
The long-term management and safekeeping of the artefacts will follow the Care Agreement developed by Griffith Local Aboriginal Land Council and Heritage NSW.
From discovery to safekeeping
These videos capture the artefacts' significant journey. From discovery, to being acknowledged in sacred ceremony and handed over for safekeeping as items of archaeological and cultural significance.
