Three new Interns welcomed to Far West LHD
Three new junior doctors have started their careers at the Broken Hill Health Service as interns for 2021.
The interns - Dr Chia-Mei Lin, Dr Grace Soon En Ting and Dr Senali Wanniarachchi - will rotate through Medical, Surgical and Emergency Departments in Broken Hill Health Service and Concord Hospital throughout the year.
'We are very pleased to welcome our new junior doctors to the Far West and at Broken Hill Health Service,' said Director Medical Services, Dr Andre Nel.
Interns are medical graduates who have completed their medical degree and are required to complete a supervised year of practice in order to become independent practitioners.
The three interns were recruited to Far West LHD through the Rural Preferential Recruitment Scheme, in which interns undertake the majority of their training in rural hospitals. This has doubled in number since 2012. This innovative scheme was designed to encourage interns to work in rural hospitals once they finished their medical school training.
'Our interns will gain exposure to a diverse range of clinical presentations and have the support to quickly develop their clinical skills and confidence,' said Dr Nel.
He said Far West LHD was pleased to contribute to training interns to build a sustainable medical workforce in rural areas, which will help improve access to a range of health services for people living in rural areas.
They will commence their duties at start of February 2021 following Term 1 orientation to the health service.
