Assessing aged care needs
If you or someone you care for needs some help around the house, you need a short-term break as a carer, or you think it’s time to look into residential aged care facilities, the Australian Government’s My Aged Care is the best place to start.
My Aged Care is a one stop shop for information about aged care. See the My Aged Care website or call 1800 200 422.
ACAT
Aged Care Assessment Teams (ACAT) conduct comprehensive assessments for Home Care Packages, residential aged care facilities, short term restorative care and the Transitional Aged Care Program (TACP).
All requests for an ACAT assessment must come through My Aged Care. Your GP can assist with making a referral if necessary.
Regional Assessment Services
Regional Assessment Services (RAS) conduct assessments for low level support to maintain or regain independence in your home.
All requests for a RAS assessment must come through My Aged Care.
Other aged care services
Transitional Aged Care Program (TACP)
TACP provides short term care to eligible patients with low level rehab type care and services (up to 12 weeks).
Wentworth Health Service has 8 residential TACP beds.
You'll need an ACAT assessment to determine your eligibility for TACP.
Short term restorative care
Short term restorative care is designed to help you reverse or slow the difficulties you are having with everyday tasks. You'll need an ACAT assessment to access this care.
Aged Services Emergency Team (ASET)
A senior aged care clinician works in the Broken Hill Emergency department to assist in the care and management of older people.
Acute to Aged Related Care Services (AARCS)
We have a senior aged care clinician whose role is to ensure older people have the support they need when they are discharged from hospital.
Residential aged care
Balranald Multipurpose Service includes 15 residential aged care places. The environment is suitable for people with dementia.
Wilcannia Multipurpose Service has 8 residential aged care beds.
Other facilities not managed by NSW Health include Murray House in Wentworth and Bidgee Haven in Balranald.
