A $45 million NSW Koala Strategy will fund a hospital and accommodation facility in Port Stephens, along with a mobile app to help preserve NSW’s koala population.
The ‘I Spy Koala’ app was developed to get NSW communities involved in mapping where they have seen koalas in the wild.
The strategy will allocate $3 million toward the two initiatives.
Whether you’re a koala rehabilitator, vet, ecologist, researcher or wildlife enthusiast — everyone in the NSW community can help to protect koalas by downloading and using the ‘I Spy Koala’ to record their NSW koala sightings.
The NSW Environment Minister Matt Kean said, “We all have a role in saving the koala – and the NSW Koala Strategy is creating opportunities for all of us in the community to get involved in koala conservation, whether you want to protect koala habitat on your land or report a koala sighting.”
The data captured through the app will be publicly available through the Sharing and Enabling Environmental Data (SEED) portal.
