Stronger councils for NSW

Published: 18 December 2015
Rate payers are set to benefit from improved infrastructure and services, and stabilised rates following the proposal for 35 new councils in NSW.

The proposed council mergers include:

  • 15 new councils for Sydney bringing the total number of metropolitan councils down from 43 to 25.
  • 20 new council across regional NSW to bring the total number of regional councils down from 109 to 87.
  • No Sydney council is forecast to be larger than Blacktown, or have fewer than 150,000 ratepayers.

NSW Premier Mike Baird said that fewer councils would mean a big reduction in red tape for the NSW community and the businesses that work with councils.
