Successful shark tagging trials
Smart drumline technology was used to track four sharks before tagging them with both satellite and acoustic tags, then driving them out into deeper waters to be released unharmed.
Minister for Primary Industries Niall Blair said the trials aim to better protect beachgoers from the risk of shark attack at NSW beaches.
“This is a great example of how different technologies can be successfully used together to detect sharks off the NSW coast,” Mr Blair said.
During previous trials of the smart drumlines, scientists from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) have successfully tagged and released bull sharks back into the water to monitor their movements and gain a better understanding of behaviour.
Trials of the smart drumlines will continue along the entire stretch of the NSW coastline over the winter months.
