FWLHD will host an information stall at Broken Hill on the 26 and 27 June with stomal therapy nurses with the aim of answering the community’s questions and promoting healthier living for people with stomas.
A stoma information stand will be at Westside Plaza (Broken Hill) on Wednesday and Thursday, 26 and 27 June from 9am to 12.30pm. Stomal Therapy Nurses Megan Jordan and Melissa Ozolins will be present to answer any questions about stomal therapy.
This year, the Australian Association of Stomal Therapy is celebrating the diversity of ostomates and those who support them.
An ostomate is someone who has a stoma, which is an artificial opening into the body made by surgery. It acts as an alternative exit for body wastes like faeces and urine and a stoma may be temporary or permanent.
National Stomal Therapy Week is designed to both acknowledge and provide support to people living with a stoma and recognise those health professionals and support agencies involved in their care.
FWLHD Nurse Consultant Wound and Stoma Care Megan Jordan said the week was an opportunity to highlight the stomal therapy services available in the Far West.
“We encourage everyone to visit our stall, and especially supporters of ostomates including families, carers, educators, stomal therapy nurses and other health professionals,” Ms Jordan said.
“We will be explaining how a stomal therapy nurse can help you, how we can assist with advice, management and care of stomas and wound issues pre and post stoma formation.
“We can also assist in referring people with a stoma to other members of our health service multidisciplinary team.”
