Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) Ambulatory Rehabilitation Service in Wagga will deliver the Stepping On falls prevention program in Tumut from 5 October 2022.
Stepping On program
The group will run on Wednesdays from 12:30pm to 2:30pm each week for seven weeks followed by a refresher session two months later.
This free NSW Ministry of Health initiative is designed for people who are living at home and who have fallen or have a fear of falling.
“The Stepping On program helps older people keep their independence and gives them confidence to stay active, so they can go about their daily activities safely and without the fear of falling,” says Stepping On Facilitator, Simone Lotter.
The program includes simple group exercise to improve strength and balance as well as education on a range of topics such as vision, home hazards and medicines. It is also an opportunity to socialise over a light refreshment with other participants provided.
MLHD Rehabilitation Services Coordinator Maddison Fellowes is pleased to be providing the program in Tumut. “It is a great opportunity for members of the community, who have had a fall or have a fear of falling, to come together socially while engaging in education and exercise,” Ms Fellowes said.
Falls pose a significant cost to the community and the health system with one in three people aged over 65 falling each year. Stepping On has been rolled out in more than 30 communities across MLHD.
The weekly sessions will start on October 5, 2022, at 12:30 at Tumut District Hospital. For further information or to book your place, please call 0428 210 361. Bookings are essential and COVID Safety rules must be adhered to.
