Innovation and sustainability were key factors in the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1 Infrastructure Contract being awarded the Outstanding Achievement – Sustainability Leadership Award at the 2023 Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) Awards.
Working closely with our major infrastructure delivery partner, Parramatta Connect (a joint venture between CPB Contractors and Downer EDI), we have delivered a sustainable and future-proofed light rail system to improve the way people connect, move and live in Western Sydney, when first passenger services commence next year.
The project was commended by the judges for its innovative sustainability initiatives, such as:
- preserving Parramatta's historical and cultural significance by using an integrated, wire-free green track design
- providing training opportunities for women in non-traditional roles, First Nations individuals, apprentices and disadvantaged workers
- using innovative technology such as macro synthetic fibres and an enhanced rail boot system to reduce operational noise and vibration
- the project's holistic approach to reducing CO2 emissions.
The project's achievements were further highlighted by its 'Leading' rating and record-breaking ISC 'As-Built' score for infrastructure works of 104.35 in 2022.
According to the judges, the project delivered good workforce outcomes and support of social enterprises and Aboriginal businesses.
'A strong project overall and application that covers environmental, economic and social aspects well,' they said.
