Mobile roadworks
Learn how to drive safely near mobile roadwork convoys when you come across them on NSW roads.
What is mobile roadwork?
Mobile roadwork is maintenance work (like linemarking and pothole repairs) that can’t be confined to one work site under static traffic control. This type of work is constantly moving, so we use mobile traffic management convoys to control traffic and keep motorists and our workers safe.
What is a mobile traffic management convoy?
Each convoy will usually include the following vehicles:
- Lead vehicle that warns oncoming motorists, alerts workers, and shields them from traffic
- Work vehicle that does the work, such as a linemarking truck
- Shadow vehicle that follows closely behind the work vehicle to protect workers and the work vehicle
- Tail vehicle that warns and diverts traffic, keeping workers safe
- Advance warning vehicle that follows behind the convoy at a distance (typically 1km) to provide advance notice to motorists

What should I do when I encounter a mobile traffic management convoy?
When you encounter a mobile traffic management convoy,
- Reduce your speed and slow down. Mobile works convoys will be traveling at a significantly slower speed than the marked speed limit.
- Wait behind the convoy until it's safe to pass.
- Follow the convoy's instructions, directions, and signage. The workers within the convoy are constantly communicating with each other, and will provide an opportunity for you to pass when it is safe to do so.
Remember, road rules still apply when interacting with a convoy, and you could face fines and demerits if you break these rules.
Because mobile works take place in varied environments, you may need to take different action each time you encounter a convoy. For example, in some situations you may be able to safely pass the convoy on the left using the shoulder, but in other situations you may need to wait behind the convoy until it is safe to pass on the right.
We ask that you please drive patiently and respect our crews near moving traffic.
Why do we do this work?
The works being carried out under mobile traffic management include linemarking, potholing, vegetation management, rumble strip installation and other critical maintenance and inspections. These works are important to ensure driver safety on our roads.
