Some of NSW’s most outstanding HSC English students have had their major works published in the annual anthology produced by NESA
Eighteen talented writers from last year’s English Extension 2 course were honoured at today’s WordeXpress award ceremony, with their works proudly published in the latest edition of the ‘Young Writers Showcase’ anthology.
Their exemplary HSC writing projects included short stories, poems, critical responses, scripts and speeches, all showcasing the diverse and impressive writing talents of the HSC class of 2018.
Mr Tom Alegounarias, Chairperson of the NESA Board, said the students deserve to be extremely proud to see their works in print.
“These 18 young writers representing 17 schools, have been selected from the more than 1500 students who studied HSC English Extension 2 in 2018. To be included in this anthology is testament to their extraordinary writing skills.”
“The creativity, maturity and literary excellence demonstrated by them is quite remarkable and no doubt will be well regarded by potential employers in whatever field they pursue.”
John Bivell from Fort Street High School finished First in Course two years running. In Year 11 he topped the state in Earth and Environmental Science and last year came first in Economics. Having his critical response, ‘Native Titles’ selected for WordeXpress, is his proudest achievement.
“Writing is my passion and when I was told I’d been chosen as a contributor for this anthology, I was really quite shocked. It’s wonderful to think that even though my writing skills and ideas are still quite immature, there’s a place for them to be expressed and published.”
“If I ever get to become a professional writer, Bill Bryson is the kind of author I’d like to be.”
Merewether High School’s Rosie Gately was chosen to read from her series of speeches ‘Don’t quote me on that…’ at the ceremony, and feels honoured to be selected.
“It’s a huge reward and recognition for all the hard work I put into my major work and a real honour to have it deemed good enough to be published for others to read.”
A collaboration between NESA and the NSW State Library, WordeXpress was first held in 2012, and showcases the work of HSC students onsite at the Library, online through the Library’s website and on tour to regional NSW public libraries. The anthology is on sale through the NESA shop online.
WordeXpress is one of eight HSC showcases which collectively celebrate excellence across a range of HSC subjects. Other NESA showcases include ARTEXPRESS for Visual Arts students, OnStage for Drama students, CALLBACK for Dance students, Encore for Music students, and Shape for Design and Technology, Textiles and Design, and Industrial Technology students.
