Calculating the centre of gravity
Use this page to understand how a load's centre of gravity affects a lift.
The centre of gravity is the point or position where a load is suspended and balanced.

Centre of gravity
The load’s centre of gravity will align vertically to the point of connection when suspended. It will not rotate, spin or tip without extra force being applied.
Lifting for the first time
When lifting a load for the first time (floating the load), watch the lifting equipment and load. Make sure the load is leaving the surface evenly. If not, return the load to the surface and readjust the lifting equipment to make sure the load is lifted evenly.
The selection of fixed or adjustable slings will be determined by this factor.

First lift: stop, check for balance. If not balanced, put down, readjust or reposition slings then test again.
Reducing load swing
Load swing should be reduced. This prevents risk to:
- the load
- lifting equipment
- operating personnel
- surrounding work environment
- the lifting mechanism.
To avoid the load swinging, the lifting equipment should be adjusted or repositioned so that the crane hook and load centre of gravity are aligned before being suspended. For example, by shortening a leg of a chain sling.
