At least 1,000 extra apprenticeships will become available for infrastructure programs across NSW, particularly in Western Sydney where Australia’s largest road project, WestConnex, and new roads for a second Sydney airport will be built.
The apprenticeships will provide young people with opportunities to learn key new skills through on-the-job training, and leave NSW with a more highly skilled workforce.
The Government will work with infrastructure contractors, registered training organisations and other stakeholders to facilitate employing and training apprentices.
NSW Premier, Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Western Sydney Mike Baird said the Government would set minimum requirements for apprenticeships on a project-by-project basis.
“Bidders will be assessed on a range of criteria, including the number of apprenticeships they are prepared to create during construction and through the partnerships they forge with local TAFE and other tertiary institutions,” Mr Baird said.
