Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance has welcomed the trial on some State Transit Authority buses.
“It is exciting to see another example of how public transport can be enhanced with technology,” Mr Constance said.
“So many people rely on being connected to their smartphone, often using the time of their commute to catch up on news, emails and social media – so it is pleasing to see these types of trials underway.”
The trial will help the government understand how reliable the technology is and how customers would use it.
Using ‘CATCH’ technology, the trial has been developed by APN Outdoor and will provide customers with free Wi-Fi, easy access to travel information, news, sport, weather, and entertainment.
To access free Wi-Fi during the trial, customers must connect to ‘Catch Wi-Fi’ on their device – that automatically opens a free and simple app, which allows them to quickly and easily browse the internet.
If the trial is successful, up to 1000 buses across Sydney could be fitted with the technology by the end of 2017.
