The Missing Middle Design Competition invited architects and building designers to design medium density homes using straightforward complying development rules.
One hundred and eleven entries were submitted for one of three medium density categories:
- dual occupancy
- terraces
- manor homes.
Minister for Planning and Housing, Anthony Roberts, said the government is exploring the possibility of building some of the entries as low-rise medium density demonstration homes.
“These talented creators showed us what the future diversity of our homes will look like,” Mr Roberts said.
The winners from each category:
- Dual occupancy: Youssofzay & Hart Architects
- Manor houses: Madigan Architecture / University of South Australia
- Terraces: Platform Architects
The NSW Government Architect and competition jury chair, Peter Poulet, said the designs will help make well-designed, low-rise medium density homes a reality through Sydney’s middle-ring suburbs and beyond.
“They will bring innovation through the arrangement of landscape, open space and off-street parking, adding to the existing structures and the ability to age in a familiar place,” Mr Poulet said.
