The 2208 new apprentices have been employed by the state’s $73 billion infrastructure programs – more than double the original target of 1000.
Infrastructure Skills Legacy pilots at Sydney Metro Northwest and the Stage 3B redevelopment of Lismore Base Hospital are targeting 20 per cent of trades positions to be apprentices.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills John Barilaro said the government was transforming NSW with record infrastructure and equipping a generation of workers with invaluable job skills.
“We made a commitment in 2014 to ensure that anyone bidding for major projects would need to outline just how they would leave a lasting skills legacy for local communities and deliver apprenticeship opportunities,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Last calendar year apprenticeship approvals increased by more than 20,000, that’s up by 17 per cent and a milestone not seen since 2010.”
The program is also looking to double the number of women in trade-related work and ensuring at least eight per cent of the total project workforce is under the age of 25.
