Harbour entrance leads decommissioned
Where
When
The event
Transport for NSW wish to advise that the above navigation hazard has been identified at the bar crossing at South West Rocks. Vessel operators are advised that navigation across the Macleay River entrance, South West Rocks, is restricted due to sand siltation resulting in shallow waters and sand banks in the vicinity of the coastal bar.
Navigation warning
The navigation leads and lead lights are no longer considered to reliably assist with safe navigation across the coastal bar. The leads will be decommissioned temporarily until the channel is re-established. The approach bearing of 243 degrees into the Macleay River is no longer relevant. Alternative options are being investigated to indicate the best passage across the bar.
This navigation warning remains in place until further notice, and will be monitored in the coming months.
Vessel operators are reminded to be extra vigilant when operating over the Macleay River Bar, in the absence of this aid to navigation. Vessels should log on with Marine Rescue and seek advice before crossing the Macleay River Entrance.
