Automatic Identification Systems

Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) enable vessels and shore-based stations to automatically send and receive identification information.

Using AIS on NSW waters

Information provided includes the ship’s name, call sign and other identifying features such as type of vessel, course and speed over the ground, heading and rate of turn for selected vessels.

AIS are required on regulated Australian vessels and foreign vessels.

Although an AIS is not mandatory for recreational and small commercial vessels only being operated on NSW navigable waters, vessel owners may decide to install AIS on their vessels to minimise operational or safety risks.

More information

More information about AIS is available from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
